Nintendo sees decline in hardware and software sales in last quarter

Nintendo saw a decline in both hardware and software sales in the fiscal quarter from April to June 2024 compared to the same period last year.

Nintendo saw a decline in both hardware and software sales in the fiscal quarter from April to June 2024 compared to the same period last year.

The Japanese company announced its quarterly earnings today. Nintendo achieved a profit of 54.5 billion yen (about 338.5 million euros), down 70.6 percent from last year. This is mainly attributed to a 46.3 percent decline in hardware sales and a 41.3 percent drop in software sales.

According to Nintendo, the decline is due to the absence of major releases such as The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and The Super Mario Bros. Movie that caused significant sales increases last year. Recent releases such as Luigi's Mansion 2 HD and Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door could not make the same impact with 1.19 million and 1.76 million copies sold, respectively.

Nintendo emphasizes that the Nintendo Switch has now been on the market for more than seven years which explains a significant drop in both hardware and software sales. The company previously announced that the successor to the Switch will be unveiled before the end of the fiscal year ending March 31, 2025.

Despite the disappointing numbers, Nintendo did not adjust its expectations for the entire fiscal year. The company remains optimistic and still expects to sell 13.5 million Switch consoles between April 2024 and March 2025. Last quarter, 2.1 million units were sold, meaning 11.4 million more consoles need to be sold to reach this goal. To date, 143.42 million Switch consoles have been sold worldwide.

Nintendo also gave an update on the ten best-selling Switch games and their current sales figures:
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe - 62.90 million
- Animal Crossing: New Horizons - 45.85 million
- Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - 34.66 million
- The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - 32.05 million
- Super Mario Odyssey - 28.21 million
- Pokémon Sword/Shield - 26.35 million
- Pokémon Scarlet/Violet - 25.29 million
- Super Mario Party - 20.84 million
- The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom - 20.80 million
- New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe - 17.61 million
