Surely the days when Sony games were released exclusively for the PlayStation platforms seem to be somewhat over. In recent years, many PlayStation exclusives have found their way to the PC. With Marvel's Spider-Man 2, Sony seems to be continuing this trend. Last year, my colleague Dylan was very pleased with the latest installment on the PlayStation 5. In this review, you will find out if I share the same opinion as my colleague.
Like most PlayStation games released for PC, the ports by Nixxes, a Dutch software company based in Utrecht, are always excellently optimized. Unfortunately, every company can sometimes go wrong, and that was the case with Nixxes and Marvel's Spider-Man 2.
The release of Marvel's Spider-Man 2 did not go as planned the game crashed regularly, even with several RTX 4090s. For a game from 2025, this is certainly a serious problem. Apart from that, the game also crashed frequently with a 1080 Ti. What we can conclude from this is that the game was not properly optimized at launch. After several weeks and several patches, Nixxes managed to fix this to a large extent. The game still crashed occasionally, but to a much lesser extent than in the first few weeks.
However, this does not mean that it is a bad game. On the contrary it is a great game, and especially in terms of graphics the game has made a lot of progress. Even if I play the game on medium or low settings, you can hardly see any difference in the appearance of the game. Of course, some shadows or other details will not be visible, but even without these elements, the game still looks great.
In addition to the graphics, gameplay and sound are, of course, incredibly important. The gameplay of Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is quite playable on PC with an Xbox controller. Even though the game is quite playable with an Xbox controller you clearly notice that this is a PlayStation title. Once you plug in a PS5 controller you notice that it feels a lot more pleasant and plays much nicer.
The gameplay of the game offers multiple characters. There are several missions in which you play as either Peter Parker or Mary Jane. Personally, I felt this was a little too present in this game. When I play a Spider-Man game I mainly want to be Spider-Man not necessarily play as Mary Jane.
As for the sound, it is definitely not bad and we have little to comment on here. The sound and gameplay provide a nice experience while playing the game.
So Marvel's Spider-Man 2 has some minor issues but they can be easily fixed with a patch. In the case of Nixxes, these problems are also relatively rare, so we should not be too quick to discount them. Despite the flaws, the game is quite playable in its current state.
Marvel's Spider-Man 2, as we pointed out in this review, has some flaws. However, this does not take away from the fact that you can play the game just fine. Despite these flaws, Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is perfectly playable. If you have a PlayStation 5 I recommend purchasing the game for that platform. In case you don't have a PS5 but still want to play the game, it is a great option for the PC despite the aforementioned flaws.
